Eclipse’s predecessor, The Twilight Saga: New Moon broke opening-day box-office records in North America, earning more than $72m in the US/Canada in fall 2009. Don’t be too surprised if Eclipse beats that record. In fact, don’t be too surprised if Eclipse beats The Dark Knight’s record (about $158m) for best debut weekend ever in North America.

Those figures haven’t been adjusted for inflation. But as has been pointed out elsewhere at Alt Film Guide, movies in the past didn’t open at 2,000, 3,000 or 4,000 locations like in the last couple of decades. So, of course movies released in the last decade or so will have a much better chance of reaching the widest possible audience right away — if they don’t, they disappear rather quickly, especially now that the DVD/VOD route has been shortened.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse will open in the United States on June 30. Melissa Rosenberg adapted Stephenie Meyer’s bestselling novel.
