The Twilight Music Girls' 'New Moon'-Inspired Video, 'La Tua Cantante'
One of the cool things about Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” franchise is the way it inspires others to create art. From paintings to fan fiction to music, there are a lot of genuinely talented folks out there — and today, we bring you the World Premiere of the latest video by five of our favorites.
Their name is the Twilight Music Girls, and they’re among the most talented of the Twilight Saga Bands out there. Just press “play” to watch their latest effort — and then read on for an interview with the five fast-rising females.
“The song is called 'La Tua Cantante,' which means 'Your Singer' in Italian," explained Mallory Trunnell. “It's a haunting ballad, with Italian and English overlapping. I wanted to write a song that was very powerful, that we could all sing together. As far as what the song means, it's about doing whatever it takes to get back to something or someone you've lost.’
As sharp-eared Twilighters will pick up on, the song also applies to specific themes from the most recent movie. “In the case of ‘New Moon,’ I tried to capture that moment where Bella is in Volterra, running through the crowd trying to save Edward,” Mallory said. “She's mentally and physically exhausted, she's in a lot of pain, but when she sees him across the fountain she knows it's only that much farther to get back to her true love — so, nothing's gonna stop her.”
The video shoot occurred a few months ago in Los Angeles, and the girls had a lot of fun creating the atmospheric look of the finished product.
“We, along with our Director Jeff Lewis and DP Ravi Gahunia, came up with this cool idea of us as ghosts that haunt this old-Hollywood, glam restaurant and perform after it closes at night,” Lauren Harding said of the concept. “Our wardrobe was very Victorian-meets-Rock ‘n’ Roll.”
“My favorite part was walking down the stairs,” added Kris Angelis. “It was funny, because they were filming at a faster speed than normal, so that when it played back, it would look more ‘ghost-y’, so we were trying to walk at the right speed in high heels — which I hardly ever wear — with wind blowing in our faces, and we couldn't look down. Let's just say that this led to a few Bella-like moments!”
Much like Mitch Hansen and some of the other “Twilight” bands that fans have fallen in love with over the last few years, the TMG ladies hope that one of their songs will eventually be chosen for the soundtrack to one of the immensely-popular films. But, they aren’t holding their breath.
“Of course we'd love the opportunity to be on any of the soundtracks,” explained Mallory. “A couple of us went for it with ‘New Moon.’ It's hard, because over 13,000 songs were submitted by signed artists! So we know there's a lot of competition.”
In the meantime, if you like the song, Kris explained that there are plenty of places for you to snag yourself a copy. “'La Tua Cantante' is available through most digital retailers. iTunes, Amazon, etc. We also sell hard copies of both of our records at our shows.”
As for the future of these pitch-perfect girls, she added: “We've got a lot coming up individually and collectively. Serafine just released a new EP (‘Songs From the Dark Side,’ available on iTunes) Lyndzie and Mallory are both finishing up their next full-length records, and Lauren and Kris are getting ready to record new projects as well. Collectively, we have upcoming shows including bigger events for the release of ‘Eclipse,’ Twi-tour, TwiCon etc. You can always check out our site and sign up for our mailing list to keep completely up-to-date on all of that. We're very excited for 2010, and can't wait to get out there and play for everyone!”
