Teen Television recently talked to the cast of The Vampire Diaries about filming and more.
Hey Ian, how much fun is it to play a badass? Where does that come from inside you?
Ian: More fun than I could ever possibly imagine, the most fun I've ever had in my entire run of my career and it just continues to be more and more fun every day.
I am not a maniacal killer, but I find some similarities and things I have in common with Damon. Damon is a very lonely guy. We all know what it's like to feel lonely.
There are two relationships that he wants back, his brother and his girl. And I know what it's like to fight with my brother, and I know what it's like to not have my girl. So I think there's a lot of common denominators between me and him. And I appreciate him. I find that I can't judge him, even though sometimes that's a bit difficult due to his actions.
So he's doing all the bad stuff for love?
Ian: I think, to sum it all up, I think he's doing all of this for love, strangely enough, and he's just completely justified.
Okay, story question on the show. In the Fall finale, Elena took her necklace off, which kind of left her vulnerable to Damon. Sooo, is that relationship going to develop?
Nina: Well, it's not a love triangle with only two people. And now that the necklace is off, she's very vulnerable. And in this next episode that we're going to see, there is going to be a lot more of Damon and Elena. That's as much as I think I can say.
Let's talk bloopers. Any embarrassing moments on or off set? We hear Paul that you are always beating yourself up for flubbing a take.
Paul: What? Really. Okay guys, who wants to embarrass themselves?
We hear that Kayla bit Nina on the shoulder.
Nina: True. Because I wanted her to actually bite me because I wanted to really feel the pain and scream. An so she would sometimes. And it was just --
Paul: There was that blooper when you were Katherine, and you had that really long dress and fell. She was trying to be all sexy.
Ian: Adorable and sexy.
Paul: And then she was "Boys, chase me".
Ian: And then she like "wham," and all you just see are her knickers.
Nina: And then I couldn't get up because it was so much dress that I was just sitting there, like "save me."
Paul: We're hysterically laughing. Then we were like, "Are you okay?"
Ian: We didn't even help her! It's on camera. [She falls] and her petticoat goes up.
Are you still happy about working in Atlanta? It's been cold.
Ian: Yeah. I think we're extremely isolated. It's a very heavy workload, and so by virtue of that, we're not out much anyway. But, Atlanta is very good to us. We're not exposed all the time. There's no media there that we have access to.
Paul: I think one of the great things about being in Atlanta is that we have each other and only each other really in a sense. We don't really have a social life and when we do, it's the three of us, which I think creates for more chemistry on screen. And I think that's fantastic.
Ian: [smiles] A lot more chemistry.
Paul: And I think if we were in L.A. or some other major metropolis with, like, tons of friends and distractions, I think it would be detrimental.
Nina: Yeah, we're in our little bubble. We love our bubble.
Ian: We talk to each other on our cellphones after we leave set. It's insane.
Paul: [holding fake phone up to ear] Hey, what are you doing?
Ian: "What are you doing? I'm just driving. Is that you behind me?"
Paul, fans want to know what a normal day is like for you when you're not working.
Paul: I feel like I'm always working and thank God because otherwise, I would be miserable. I have the weekends but then I'm usually doing some kind of press. Boring answer but true. When I'm not working, I'm on the phone with Ian or Nina.
Nina: Talking about work...
Paul: Or the script....
Ian: Or press...
Paul: We did have a month break and that was nice. I went to London for press stuff and Poland to visit my family. I haven't seen my family in years.
With the show winning at the People's Choice Awards, you must get tons of fan letters.. What are they like?
Paul: Very positive ones. No scary letters from jail [laughter].
Nina: I get little drawings.
Ian: There are a lot of suggestions and some are questions like "What's your favorite color?" But some of the letters are very insightful and heartfelt. Teen girls are so into the love aspect of the show. It's about love. They're inquisitive about it.
Ian and Paul, are you kind of like brothers in real life?
Ian: We're like brothers. I mean it's kind of funny. Today, Nina and I were on the plane, and Paul and I look at each other and we're literally, wearing the same clothes. We walk out and go 'Okay, dude, which one is going to change?" Flip a coin. We like going back to flashbacks when we actually like each other on the show. We have a lot of fun.
Paul: But I always like to think that Stefan is capable of the dark side as much as Damon is capable of a light side. First and foremost, though, we're vampires.
